How a class works

When you arrive, a coordinator checks you in; when you leave, you check out. The app records each visit, so you and your coordinator can see how often you have practised.

You learn at your own pace. Each level has a list of items to learn: strokes, rhythms and how to play them in kīrtana. When you can play an item, a coordinator ticks it off for you.

Three levels

  1. Beginner: holding and caring for the drum, the basic strokes of each hand, and the first simple rhythms.
  2. Intermediate: more rhythms, moving from one rhythm to another, and playing steadily with singing.
  3. Advanced: longer rhythm cycles, variations, and leading the rhythm in a kīrtana.

Moving up a level takes an assessment by the facilitator. Your coordinator suggests you for it when you are ready.

Who teaches

Instruments

To confirm: does the class lend drums to students during class, or should students bring their own?

A drum needs care: keep it away from strong heat and cold, cover skin heads, and never stand the drum on its large head.

Children

Students under 18 are welcome. A parent or guardian fills in and signs a consent form, which is kept at the desk. See the privacy notice for how children's data is handled.
